Glendale Engagement Photo Sessions

Engagement photo session in Glendale — couple by a window

This small section of my website is to guide couples on what to do and what to wear for their engagement or pre-wedding photo session. I love these photo shoots because what better way to get to know your photographer than to actually have a photo shoot with him/her. After this you are ready for your wedding day because you know exactly who to expect and what to expect.

Engagement photography sessions are wonderful for many reasons. Engagement photography not only provides you with wonderful imagery capturing your pre-wedding romance, it also gives you the chance to create a wonderful presentation at the wedding. By request, we often use engagement session imagery to create slideshows, guest sign-in books, event cards, invitations and more!

In addition, the engagement session also allows you to get to know your photographer a little more prior to the wedding. This allows you as a couple to build a better relationship with your photographer. This relationship will allow your photographer to create more natural and unique imagery since he/she has a good understanding of your unique personalities and tastes. Here are two tips to get the most of your engagement session. First, think of a meaningful place to the both of you—first date, proposal spot, or another special place. Second, plan the engagement shoot session as early as possible.

The rule of thumb is at least 90 days from the wedding date. But the further out from the wedding the better. You’ll be able to enjoy your images in your home, create nice wedding invitations and stationery, and you won’t be rushing to add one more thing in your already busy schedule.

1. Wardrobe Guide

We’ll tailor recommendations to your location, but a few core tips always help. It’s all about styling and planning—the more time you invest in choosing a wardrobe, the happier you’ll be with the results. Don’t hesitate to consult with us on options for colors and accessories.

  1. Dress: Solid colors keep attention on your faces. Avoid turtlenecks and very loose clothing; shorts/capris can make legs appear shorter.
  2. Colors: Monochrome is easy to coordinate; complementary colors add energy. Darker colors slim; lighter colors widen. Dark pants or jeans with dark shoes visually anchor a portrait.
  3. Accessories: Keep it minimal to avoid distractions.
  4. Footwear: Skip running shoes/white socks; consider boots, sandals or barefoot for casual looks.
  5. Props: Bring items that reflect you—musical instruments, sports gear, etc. Aim for 2–3 outfits; we’ll help pick.

2. Makeup Guide

Looking good on camera doesn’t require a makeup artist, but camera-friendly techniques help. Because photos are two-dimensional, shadows and highlights may need emphasis or de-emphasis for the best effect.

  1. Skin: Start with smooth, toned, moisturized skin for even application.
  2. Minimize Shadows: Use a slightly lighter concealer on darker areas; blend foundation upward and to the edges.
  3. Bronze/Blush: A light bronzer or blush can sculpt; apply sparingly and blend.
  4. Eyes & Lines: Softer liners and blended smoky tones keep eyes open and natural; highlight brow area lightly.
  5. Lips: Define gently with a shade near natural lip color; gloss at the center adds a subtle pout.
  6. Powder: A translucent dusting controls shine, especially in the T-zone.
  7. Brows: Shape to fit your features; avoid major tweezing right before the session.
  8. Redness: A light blue pencil along the inner lower lid can brighten whites of the eyes.
